Audio Book List (Youtube) For some, reading along with an audio book can be helpful for long reads. If you struggle to read the book on your own, try following along with an audio book. Some are read by chapter and some are all in one go (you may need to record the time to start and stop)
Novel Reading Tips 1. Make a plan with your group and decide what chapters will be read by when 2. Learn your reading style:
How many minutes or how many pages can you read before you loose focus?
This amount is likely how much you should chunk your reading and set as a goal between breaks
Where do you like to read and wont get distracted?
This is likely a comfortable, quiet, and relaxing place where other people won't distract you
Turn off your phone, TV, or another devices or keep them out of sight
Ex. your room, living room (no tv), a hidden nook in your house, outside on the lawn (during nice weather), the library, or at a cafe
When can you make a habit of reading? We often forget, but when might be the best time to commit?
Chunk and schedule times of day to read in 10-30+ minute increments
Many people find reading before bed a good way to help them fall asleep at night
Set a goal and reward yourself (Work then play)
Before you read, set a goal of how far you want to read
Once you hit that goal or read past, reward yourself with something fun to do or a treat
3. Make notes as you go along
Use post-its or write down on a piece of paper any important events in the book and note what pages they are on
4. Reflect and ask others
Talking about the book with peers can help clarify any parts of the book you may be unsure of
5. Ask, why is my teacher making us read this book?
Reading books is not just about memorizing facts, it is often about understanding a big idea or concept
Your teacher is probably more interested in what the book is teaching you and the questions you have, rather then memorizing small facts
* If the book has a movie, try to watch the movie after reading the book, as movies tend to change parts of the story and leave out important details. However, for some people, watching the movie or listening to an audio book might help before reading complex stories.
